How Victorians did gadgets
Posted on 08/19/2008 at 02:56 PM

Who needs an iPhone when one can wear a special pair of glasses that allows reading while laying down (take a look at the picture below)? I came across this CNET article and photo gallery and was pretty impressed (and sometimes puzzled). Below I pulled a few of my favorite gadgets from the 1800's but if you're interested in the entire list, head on over to CNET.

Original Content Thinking about buying Mario Super Sluggers?

Mario Super Sluggers box art

I love the baseball game that’s included with Wii Sports, but if you’re like me you’ll probably soon be pretty bored of simply swinging and pitching. What about playing the field? Lets not forget how Wii Sports’ baseball game also doesn’t really include any sort of campaign, missions, or unlockable characters. This is where Mario Super Sluggers can fill the void. To be released August 25th, 2008, this Mario sports game looks promising and will hopefully be exactly what us Western’s need to fulfill our desire for the great American past time.

Much like it’s predecessor, Mario Super Sluggers touts several different game modes; four to be exact.

Original Content Inglorious Bastards
Posted on 08/15/2008 at 04:38 PM

Some of you maybe have heard about this project before, but I just came across some info today and must say it looks promising. Currently Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, and newly committed Mike Myers are staring with the possibility of many other big names joining the rooster, including The Office's B.J. Novak and Adam Sandler. (Well, B.J.'s a big name to me at least).

Originally released in 1977, this remake will be made directed by Quentin Tarantino and is looking at a 2009 release. As described by IMDB:

"In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers."

I tried searching for some video footage of the potential 2009 release of this film, however, I came up a little short only found this clip that highlights a few scenes from the original and has a short interview with Tarantino and Enzo Castellari, the director of the 1977 version. Here it is:

4G is on its way and maybe even sooner than you think
Posted on 08/15/2008 at 03:48 PM

"As the iPhone has shown, carriers are going to have to upgrade their mobile networks to handle the increasing amount of data traffic that will come from users surfing social networks, YouTube and heaven knows what else while on the go. Just please don’t do it while driving. So for those reading about the promise of 4G networks such as LTE or mobile WiMAX, here’s a look at each carrier’s launch plans and when (or if) you can expect to see up to 100 Mbps down on your mobile network.

AT&T: The nation’s largest network in terms of subscribers, AT&T plans to use LTE to upgrade to 4G, but not for a long, long time. For now it’s content with its current 3G network. A spokesman wrote via email, “Our HSPA network has the potential to hit theoretical peak speeds more than five times faster than AT&T’s current 3G speed ranges.” When it does upgrade, it will be to HSPA+ in 2009 and 2010. Eventually it will go to LTE, but won’t begin testing until 2010 or 2011 with full deployment coming ... Read more

Consuming caffeine while pregnant doubles miscarriage risk
Posted on 08/11/2008 at 02:25 PM

Baby

So if you're trying to not have that baby that's growing in your uterus...

"Drinking as little as 10 ounces of coffee per day may double a pregnant woman's risk of miscarriage, according to a new study conducted by Kaiser Permanente researchers and published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Researchers interviewed 1,063 pregnant women, including 102 who had already suffered a miscarriage, about their caffeine intake. The median length of pregnancy for the women at the time of interview was 71 days. Another 70 women miscarried before the end of their pregnancies, bringing the total to 172, or about 16 percent - a fairly normal miscarriage rate.

Women who said that they never drank caffeine had a 12.5 percent chance of miscarriage, while women who reported drinking 200 milligrams or more of caffeine per day had a 24.5 percent miscarriage rate. This represented nearly twice the miscarriage risk of the non-caffeine drinkers. The effects of caffeine on miscarriage ... Read more

Original Content DNS vulnerability... test your domain now
Posted on 08/07/2008 at 04:52 PM

As you may recall, I posted a story about this several weeks ago on patching your system. However, if you own a domain name, especially if you have webspace with that registrar, ICANN and IANA highly recommend running this test to ensure your hosting service has patched their DNS servers. I ran it for soggypickle, and thankfully our hosting service has patched their systems.
