No more new content as of December 5th, 2008

To all of our frequent visitors:
You've probably noticed the pickle hasn't had much new content lately. I've decided to abandon the project and move onto bigger and better things (hopefully). That doesn't mean the pickle is done forever, just until I decide what is a better fit for the site. I personally think we currently have our hands in too many different pockets, and although I feel it would work if our content was updated more often, all of the other authors have abandoned the project as well and posting often on such a wide range of topics is difficult for one person. The site wasn't updated nearly as often as I hoped.
For the time being, all of the existing pickle content will still be available. If I ever decide to take it down, I'll be sure to post about it.
Although the majority of our visits are from search engines and our returning visitor count small, to those of you that do frequent the pickle, I've always appreciated your hits.

Happy birthday to me...
Posted on 08/30/2008

So it's been a year since the pickle's launched. What accomplishments have we made over the past 365 days?
The addition of more authors (although none of them ever post).
Lots of layout tweaking. I don't know many different menu systems were implemented but we finally have one that works. There's also been a few different headers, logos, and other design elements.
1,167 posts have been made.
1,827 different tags have used.
An average of 1,300 visits per week.
A substantial increase in the number of original posts.
I can't think of much else right now, but I'll update the list if any other interesting accomplishments come to me.

Four framed by NYPD in drug setup
Posted on 06/30/2008
at 09:32 AM
"Undercover police officers who arrested four men on drug charges are under investigation after surveillance video proved the men they arrested committed no crime.
Drug charges against brothers Jose Colon and Maximo Colon, along with two of their friends have been dropped. The undercover NYPD officers are seen on video dancing in the street, then attempting to frame four innocent men.
"I asked police officer why are you arresting me," said Maximo Colon. "Never did I get an answer."
The investigators swore under oath they bought drugs from the four men. Jose and Maximo colon say that didn't happen.
"The cops are supposed to help us," said a shaken Jose Colon."
This is why I'm glad I'm not a minority. This shit is terrible and these officers should be fired. Good to see that only two of them have been put on restricted duty while the other two are still out on the streets, undercover, trying to bust drug dealers.

Christianity could be gone within a century
Posted on 06/24/2008

That's a bit of a powerful statement, but it has its grounds...
"Research by the Orthodox Jewish organisation Aish found that just over a third of people thought religions like Christianity and Judaism would still be practiced in Britain in 100 years' time.
Although four in 10 people said they would choose to be a member of the Christian religion, almost the same number said they would rather practice no religion at all.
Buddhism however, proved more attractive than both Islam and Judaism, and was chosen by nine per cent of those questioned."

Expecting a stimulus check? Make sure you filed...
Posted on 06/21/2008
at 11:34 AM
"Want your stimulus payment? You need to file a tax return first. That goes for retirees and disabled veterans who don't normally have to file taxes.
In Minnesota alone, 64,000 people are potentially missing out on their checks, which were passed out to help boost the struggling economy. The number of Americans yet to file for their payments is 5.2 million nationwide.
So far, the IRS has issued 76.5 million payments worth $63.8 billion to taxpayers young and old; the agency expects to issue 124 million payments by year's end.
Recipients receive as much as $600, or $1,200 for married couples filing jointly, plus $300 per child younger than 17. To receive a check, taxpayers must file a return by October 15."
I didn't get one :\ but then again I'm pretty sure I'm not eligible.

Drunk driver plows into bike race
Posted on 06/03/2008
at 02:55 PM
Wow...

"A car plowed into a bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others. The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race Sunday, police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez said Monday.
A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision. Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing 37-year-old Alejandro Alvarez of Monterrey."

Teen figures out how to decompose plastic bags in 3 months
Posted on 05/27/2008
at 09:58 AM
"Getting ordinary plastic bags to rot away like banana peels would be an environmental dream come true.
After all, we produce 500 billion a year worldwide and they take up to 1,000 years to decompose. They take up space in landfills, litter our streets and parks, pollute the oceans and kill the animals that eat them.
Now a Waterloo teenager has found a way to make plastic bags degrade faster -- in three months, he figures.
Daniel Burd's project won the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. He came back with a long list of awards, including a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and recognition that he has found a practical way to help the environment."
This kid could never work a day in his life if he plays his cards right.

French fry innovator dies at age 99
Posted on 05/26/2008
at 01:04 PM

"J.R. Simplot, the billionaire founder of the Boise, Idaho-based agriculture business that bears his name and who helped make French fries a staple of the American diet and waistline, died on Sunday at the age of 99, officials said.
After pioneering the first commercial frozen French fry in the late 1940s, Simplot eventually became a major supplier of Idaho potatoes to McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's. His privately held company, where he was chairman emeritus, reported $3.3 billion in sales in 2006.
An official at the Ada County Coroner's office said Simplot died at home on Sunday morning of natural causes."
French fries are awesome but thanks to this guy, American's probably have higher heart attack rates.
