Original Content No more new content as of December 5th, 2008
Posted on 12/05/2008 at 10:38 AM

To all of our frequent visitors:

You've probably noticed the pickle hasn't had much new content lately. I've decided to abandon the project and move onto bigger and better things (hopefully). That doesn't mean the pickle is done forever, just until I decide what is a better fit for the site. I personally think we currently have our hands in too many different pockets, and although I feel it would work if our content was updated more often, all of the other authors have abandoned the project as well and posting often on such a wide range of topics is difficult for one person. The site wasn't updated nearly as often as I hoped.

For the time being, all of the existing pickle content will still be available. If I ever decide to take it down, I'll be sure to post about it.

Although the majority of our visits are from search engines and our returning visitor count small, to those of you that do frequent the pickle, I've always appreciated your hits.

Original Content Happy birthday to me...
Posted on 08/30/2008 at 11:33 AM

Happy Birthday

So it's been a year since the pickle's launched. What accomplishments have we made over the past 365 days?
The addition of more authors (although none of them ever post).
Lots of layout tweaking. I don't know many different menu systems were implemented but we finally have one that works. There's also been a few different headers, logos, and other design elements.
1,167 posts have been made.
1,827 different tags have used.
An average of 1,300 visits per week.
A substantial increase in the number of original posts.
I can't think of much else right now, but I'll update the list if any other interesting accomplishments come to me.

Apple finally patches DNS vulnerability... a month late
Posted on 08/01/2008 at 01:32 PM

Remember that DNS vulnerability I posted about roughly a month ago? I recall mentioning in the article that it was odd Apple didn't have any software updates available that address the issue, but apparently they were just a step behind every other major software developer...

"In early July, security researcher Dan Kaminsky announced he'd discovered a major flaw in the Domain Name System, the process by which numeric IP addresses are converted to word-based names on the Internet.

The flaw could allow hackers to redirect Web users to malicious sites, and it was something that could affect every computer that relies on it, as well as those that administer the system. The potential for catastrophe was very real.

Kaminsky's announcement coincided with a coordinated effort by all the major software developers that work with DNS to patch their products. As one security researcher put it, it was "an astonishing collaboration".

But one major player was missing: Apple. While other m... Read more

More Windows XP SP3 issues arise
Posted on 06/23/2008 at 09:24 AM

A little while back I posted an article about Windows XP's SP3 update, listing some perks and issues pretaining to the update. Now it looks like users of Symantec products are experiencing additional problems...

"Symantec on Thursday said it was Microsoft's code that crippled some PCs after upgrades to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) emptied Device Manager, deleted network connections, and packed the registry with thousands of bogus entries.

"We finally got to the bottom of this last night," said Dave Cole, Symantec's senior director for product management of its consumer software. "All of these problems are related to the same thing, a Microsoft file that created all the garbage entries [in the registry]."

He also said that some of the same symptoms had been acknowledged by Microsoft when users updated to Windows XP SP2 several years ago; Cole referenced a pair of Microsoft support documents to back up his claim.

Two weeks ago, after Microsoft launched Windows XP SP3 on Windows Update, users started reporting that their network cards and previously crafted connections had mysteriously vanished from Windows ... Read more

Time to update your Mac; Apple patches 40 critical security holes
Posted on 05/31/2008 at 11:19 AM

Apple's Software Update

"Apple on Wednesday released an update to fix at least 40 different security holes in computers powered by its Mac OS X operating system and other software, including a just-in-time update to fix a dangerous vulnerability in the Adobe Flash Player that is being rather heavily exploited at the moment in Microsoft Windows versions of the player.

The Flash update brings the Mac version of the Flash Player up to the latest 9.0.124.0 version, which protects users against a proliferating number of sites using vulnerabilities in older Flash versions to install malicious software on exposed computers. While the attackers are so far delivering viral payloads designed exclusively for Microsoft Windows systems, the researcher who discovered the method by which the flaw is being attacked warned that the vulnerability could be similarly exploited on any operating system for which Flash is available, including Mac OS X."

Time to run software update.

Original Content Windows XP SP3; solid in some areas, not so much in others
Posted on 06/23/2008 at 09:28 AM

Update: If you're experiencing issues after upgrading to SP3 and have Symantec products installed (specifically Norton 2008), you might want to check this article out.

I upgraded my XP installation last night to service pack 3 and as far as I can tell, all went smoothy. I use Remote Desktop, Firefox, Office 2007, and Visual Studio 2005 the most and can't say I've had any problems. Remote Desktop actually got an upgrade and from what I've experienced so far, it's definitely an improvement. That pesky confirmation dialog that plagued users with the previous versions of Remote Desktop 6 (but not version 5, which shipped with XP) has been removed. Also, the domain being automatically added to the user name has been removed. Not sure what I'm talking about? Here's some screen shots:

RDC 6, screen shot 1
Remote Desktop 6 pre SP3 screen shot 1

RDC, screen shot 2
Remote Desktop 6 pre SP3 screen shot 2

In the first screen shot, you'll see the typical Remote Desktop connection interface, however, after you enter the IP address of the system you want to connect to, another dialog appears asking you for your login credentials. This isn't too much of a nuisance, but it's an added step from the previous version. The other annoyance is how it adds the connection address to the domain field. For example, if you connect to 192.168.0.100, the credentials dialog pops up (screen shot 2) and automatically adds the domain to the user name field (example: 192.168.0.100\tim), which isn't a problem if you're connecting with the computer's netbios name, but if you're using an IP address, which seems ... Windows XP SP3 will be available April 29th
Posted on 04/22/2008 at 12:56 PM

I know you've all been waiting... Well, the wait will soon be over. Take a ticket and get in line for SP3 or just visit update.microsoft.com (using Internet Explorer of course). So what exactly will SP3 do for you? ZDNet has a good write up and here's some answers to the questions you've been dying to ask.

"What sort of new and enhanced functionality does SP3 contain?

Some features of note include:
* Improvements to “black hole” router detection.
* Network Access Protection, which is a network policy enforcement platform previously seen in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
* Enhanced Control Panel Security Options which better explains the impact of the various settings.
* Product key-free installation now possible.

What’s the purpose of SP3?

According to Microsoft, the goals of SP3 are:
* Provide a new baseline for customers still deploying Windows XP, to help them avoid the inconvenience of applying individual updates.
* Fill gaps in the updates users might have missed by declining individual updates whe... Read more
